This thesis presents the synthesis and potential applications for novel photoreactive
polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) copolymers as functional
coatings or polymer gels. The successful development of a novel benzophenonebased
UV-light sensitive comonomer (VEBP) featuring excellent copolymerization
capability and chemical stability towards strong alkaline saponification conditions,
allows the simple and efficient polymerization of PVAc-co-VEBP and PVA-co-VEBP
(after saponification) copolymers with defined incorporation rates of this photocross-
linker. This photoreactive VEBP moiety allows the unspecific generation of
cross-links or the surface-attachment of such polymers to a variety of aliphatic groupbearing
surfaces via irradiation with UV-light.
In addition, this work demonstrates potential applications of such copolymers as
carrier systems in ‘load and controlled release’ experiments, in which a model
substance confined in such cross-linked polymer particles, can be released in a
controlled manner into aqueous surrounding media upon a pH-stimulus.
Furthermore, PVAc-co-VEBP copolymers are used as functional, hydrophobic papercoatings,
which enable control over wetting or imbibition of water on coated
substrates by direct saponification of the fiber-immobilized copolymer coating, i.e. the
conversion of the hydrophobic (dewetting) PVAc-species into the hydrophilic
(wetting) PVA-species.
