Augmented Reality (AR) is one of the pillar technologies of Industry 4.0. Its main function is to provide users with a composite view that combines reality with “unreal” virtual elements. Classified under the wider concept of Mixed Reality (MR), AR aims at enhancing users’ perception of their environments. In this context, AR is viewed as a vital tool for industrial processes visualization where it has been proven valuable in different setups and applications. As a result, the field of industrial AR appeared. In spite of all undertaken research and experimentations, AR technology is still not in a real use. Current industrial AR development is faced by different challenges such real-time performance, scalability and standardized collaboration. Therefore, a new approach that overcomes these challenges is demanded.
This dissertation looks at integrating the concept of Cloud Computing (CC) within AR opening the door for solving the previously mentioned challenges. AR could inherit CC characteristics, which offer an extension for the computing ability of AR end devices. As a result, AR demanding operations are moved to a cloud service where infinite resources can provide the needed performance and connectivity. In addition, AR capabilities can be extended to Artificial Intelligence (AI) elements that perform cutting-edge machine learning solutions.
The core contribution of this dissertation is to enable AR applications developers by means of a cloud-based framework that establishes a standardized setup for implementing the desired AR functionalities. The proposed framework is a modular platform that is exposed as a web-service. It allows developers to utilize existing AR functionalities and upload customized ones. The presented novel approach sets the basis to define AR not only as a tool that enhances visual perception (or other human senses); but rather as an intelligent interface that is an integrated part within the whole ecosystem of Industry 4.0.

Kurzbeschreibung

As one of the pillars of Industry 4.0, Augmented Reality (AR) has the potential of improving workspaces and different processes efficiency. Nevertheless, AR is still not in real implementation. This dissertation presents a new approach for developing interactive AR applications by providing a novel framework with a redesign of the way AR is implemented. The solution is based on enabling AR to operate within the cloud, converting all AR devices into thin-clients with low-performance requirements.
